Chilean minor Cities: La Serena, Valparaiso and Vina del Mar

La Serena is nestled along the Pacific Ocean and stands as a radiant gem on Chile’s coastline, beckoning travelers with its blend of historical charm, coastal beauty, and a vibrant cultural scene. This city, known for its clear skies, colonial architecture, and inviting beaches, offers a delightful escape for those seeking a unique Chilean experience.

The beach is approximately a 20 minutes walk from the city center which was built upon a hill. The periphery that extends to La Serena’s beach is booming, the city is clean and the modern malls and condos look a little too ritzy for my liking. In the high season the long beach is usually jam packed with tourists. It is a fairy good spot for surfing.

It’s a very pleasant town to stay for a longer period of time if you are looking for a peaceful place with all the necessary services and good internet connection. Founded in 1544, La Serena boasts a rich colonial history evident in its well-preserved architecture. The city’s historic center is adorned with pastel-colored buildings, cobblestone streets, and charming squares. The Cathedral of La Serena, with its neoclassical facade, stands as a testament to the city’s architectural heritage. The heart of La Serena is obviously Plaza de Armas. Surrounded by palm trees and colonial buildings, the square is a hub of activity. Visitors can relax in the shade, observe local life, and explore nearby attractions like the Governor’s Palace.

La Serena, with its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and celestial wonders, invites travelers to explore its enchanting streets and coastal landscapes. Whether you’re drawn to colonial architecture, stargazing adventures, or the tranquility of the Pacific shores, La Serena unfolds as a captivating destination along Chile’s vibrant coastline.

Valparaiso or Valpo as she is affectionately known: Give a creative seven year old a set of bright crayons, some corrugated iron, an aquamarine bay dotted with toy ships and a hilly sandbox covered with jacaranda and hibiscus, shake it all up, sprinkle it with stray dogs, dog excrements and plenty of garbage et voilà: Valparaìso!  Untidy, unkempt, chaotic and full of character. Artsy rainbow graffiti, houses painted fuchsia, turquoise, bright yellow, purple, emerald green and pretty much any loud paint ever produced. Cute bars, hostels and restaurants on some hills, dilapidated shacks on the others. A relatively polished waterfront sits shoulder to shoulder with a downright filthy port.
The city was born as a port and became an open-air street art expo on the surrounding hills. Rickety funiculars “ascensores” crick and crack their way to the top, tourists visit Neruda’s former home turned museum and locals go about their daily business. Once rich and wealthy, then neglected and poor, now vibey, edgy and trendy all at the same time. Valpo is a special multi-faceted city that makes for a pleasant two day stay. As Neruda used to say this city is like a beautiful woman that doesn’t really bother with formalities such as make up or washing, but behind the layer of dirt you can tell she’s more than just pretty.

Vina del Mar can be defined as Chile’s Seaside Oasis of Elegance and Entertainment
Situated along the Pacific Ocean, the town emerges as a coastal haven, effortlessly blending sophistication with natural beauty. Known as the “Garden City,” Viña del Mar offers a delightful escape with its manicured gardens, golden beaches, and a vibrant cultural scene. Spend some time here and explore the charm and allure of this stunning place. The picturesque beaches, and Playa Caleta Abarca stands out with its golden sands and inviting waters. A symbol of Viña del Mar is the Flower Clock is a botanical masterpiece that combines functionality with aesthetics. Situated in a meticulously landscaped garden, this giant clock is adorned with vibrant flowers, creating a living timepiece that captures the essence of the city. If you are looking for a tranquil escape amidst lush greenery, visit Quinta Vergara Park. Home to the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater, this expansive park hosts cultural events, concerts, and the renowned Viña del Mar International Song Festival. The park’s botanical garden showcases a diverse collection of plant species. While strolling through the town you cannot miss Palacio Vergara and Wuff Castle. The first is a neoclassical mansion that once belonged to the Vergara family. Today, it houses the Municipal Library and serves as a cultural center. The palace’s gardens provide a serene setting for visitors to explore. The Castle, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, offers panoramic views of the coastline. The Wuff Castle, built in the early 20th century, combines Gothic and Moorish architectural elements, adding a touch of historical charm to Viña del Mar.
Viña del Mar, with its blend of seaside beauty, cultural richness, and sophisticated entertainment, stands as a destination that captivates the hearts of visitors.
