Getting to Kuelap
By Air
The fastest way to reach the Amazonas region is by flying into Jaén or Chachapoyas.
- Jaén Airport (Shumba Airport): From here, you can take a bus or a private taxi to Chachapoyas, which is about a 4-5 hour drive.
- Chachapoyas Airport: Limited flights are available, mostly from Lima. This airport is closer to Kuelap, making it a convenient option.

By Land
- From Lima: The journey by bus or car from Lima to Chachapoyas takes about 22-24 hours, so be prepared for a long trip.
- From Tarapoto: If you’re coming from the Amazon region, the trip to Chachapoyas takes about 8-10 hours by bus or car.
Local Transport to Kuelap
- From Chachapoyas: The most common route is from Chachapoyas to Kuelap. You can take a bus, a shared taxi (colectivo), or join a guided tour.
- Cable Car: The easiest and most scenic way to reach Kuelap is by taking the cable car from the town of Nuevo Tingo. The cable car ride itself is an experience, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.

Best Time to Visit
- Dry Season (April to October): The best time to visit Kuelap is during the dry season when the weather is more predictable and the trails are less muddy.
- Wet Season (November to March): Visiting during the wet season can be more challenging due to heavy rains and muddy conditions, but the site will be lush and green.
Entry Fees and Hours
- Entry Fee: The entrance fee to Kuelap is generally around 20 soles for adults and 10 soles for students. Prices can vary, so check the latest rates before you go.

- Circular Stone Houses: Inside the fortress, you’ll find over 400 circular stone houses, many adorned with geometric patterns and symbolic carvings. These structures provide insights into the daily lives and architectural prowess of the Chachapoya people.
- El Tintero: A distinctive inverted cone-shaped structure believed to have served as a ceremonial center or astronomical observatory.

Hiking to Kuelap
If you’re up for a physical challenge, consider hiking to Kuelap from the nearby town of Tingo. The hike is about 9 kilometers and can take 3-4 hours. The trail is steep and can be slippery during the wet season, so come prepared with good hiking shoes and plenty of water. More about it in my post here

- Acclimatize: Kuelap is situated at an altitude of about 3,000 meters. Spend a day or two in Chachapoyas to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness.
