Jericoacoara, located in the state of Ceará, is a small fishing village turned tourist hotspot that lies within a national park. This remote village is surrounded by towering sand dunes, crystalline lagoons, and the vast Atlantic Ocean, making it an oasis of natural beauty. The town’s unique charm stems from its relaxed vibe and the harmonious blend of traditional Brazilian culture with international influences.
The story of Jeri’s transformation begins about 30 years ago when adventurous Italians started traveling to this secluded area. Enamored by the serene, dreamy feel of the place, many chose to settle down, opening pousadas (guesthouses) and restaurants. This influx of European settlers helped shape the town’s current identity, blending local traditions with a touch of Italian flair. Over the years, Jeri has grown, but it has managed to maintain its rustic charm and laid-back atmosphere.

Today, Jericoacoara thrives on an economy centered around tourism. The town’s popularity has grown significantly, and it now supports a range of businesses catering to visitors’ needs. Dune buggy tours across the breathtaking dunes, kite surfing on the expansive waters, and a variety of other water sports are among the primary attractions. This influx of tourists has spurred economic growth, providing livelihoods for many locals and creating a vibrant, bustling community.
While Jeri is known for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, it is also gaining a reputation as a premier surfing destination. The consistent winds, warm waters, and perfect wave conditions make it an ideal spot for surfers of all levels. We loved to surf in those small and long waves, perfect for a long boarder like me. The longboarding spot is really one of the highlights of surfing in Jeri. A small but long wave peels down the point, offering a smooth and enjoyable ride. The warm water and the perfect shape of the wave create an endless source of delight. Every 4-5 years, a significant swell rolls in, transforming the wave into sheer perfection and attracting surfers from around the world eager to experience the magic of Jericoacoara. The main surfing season runs from June to February, with the best waves typically appearing between September and November. However, if you are not too picky and you love to ride a longboard, you will have tones of fun in April an May as well. The main thing is that the waves in Jeri are known for their length and consistency, providing an excellent playground for longboarders and shortboarders alike.

Over the years, Jeri has developed a robust surfing infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of enthusiasts. Numerous surf schools and rental shops have sprung up, offering lessons and equipment for beginners and advanced surfers. Experienced instructors provide valuable guidance, ensuring that even those new to the sport can safely enjoy the waves.
