Situated along Brazil’s northeastern coast in the state of Bahia, Itacaré is a hidden gem renowned for its stunning beaches, rainforests, and surf culture. This charming town offers an ideal combination of natural beauty and relaxing surf vibe, making it a perfect destination for surfers and travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation. Itacaré has quite a unique geography: rugged coastline and Atlantic Forest. This provides an array of surf breaks suitable for all skill levels, while the town itself is warm and has a welcoming atmosphere enriched by local traditions and an eco-tourism scene. Although tourism is growing fast and Itacaré is a quaint surfer town, it is still a town in one of the poorest regions in Brazil and you can tell that the contrasts here between rich and poor are huge.

While here, it was wonderful to explore the beaches and the relaxed atmosphere: palm trees, coconuts, golden sand, stunning water and big roaring surf. There are three beautiful beaches within a short walk from Itacaré and many others within a short drive and subsequent hike. The beaches are so postcard perfect that I almost felt like opening a coconut stand right there and then. The surf in Boca da Barra is big and the currents are strong so I advice this spot only to the expert surfers.

Getting to Itacaré

Itacaré’s relatively remote location adds to its charm, offering a sense of escape from more crowded tourist spots. Here’s how to reach this coastal paradise:

1. By Air to Salvador: The most common entry point to Itacaré is Salvador, the capital of Bahia. Salvador’s Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (SSA) is well-connected with direct flights from major Brazilian cities and some international destinations.
2. From Salvador to Itacaré:
   • By Car or Bus: From Salvador, Itacaré is approximately 250 kilometers south. Travelers can either rent a car for a scenic drive along the coast or take a bus. The drive offers breathtaking ocean views and passes through charming coastal towns. Buses, operated by companies like Águia Branca and Cidade Sol, provide a more economical and comfortable option, though the journey takes about 6 to 8 hours depending on stops.
   • Via Ferry and Road: An alternative route involves taking a ferry from Salvador to Bom Despacho on the Ilha de Itaparica, followed by a drive or bus ride to Itacaré. This route offers a unique travel experience, including the crossing of the Bay of All Saints. This is the option I experienced and enjoyed it although it lasted basically the whole day.
3. By Air to Ilhéus: Another option is to fly to Ilhéus Airport (IOS), which is closer to Itacaré, just about 70 kilometers away. From Ilhéus, travelers can take a taxi, private transfer, or bus to Itacaré, a journey of approximately 1.5 hours.

Surfing in Itacaré

Itacaré is a surfer’s paradise, boasting a variety of surf spots that cater to beginners and seasoned pros alike. The region’s consistent swells, warm waters, and stunning backdrops make it a top surfing destination in Brazil.

1. Praia da Tiririca: One of Itacaré’s most famous surf spots, Tiririca Beach is known for its powerful waves and reliable conditions year-round. It’s a favorite among experienced surfers who appreciate its hollow waves and challenging breaks. The beach is also home to several surf schools, making it accessible for beginners looking to catch their first waves.
2. Praia do Resende: Located closer to the town center, Resende Beach offers more forgiving waves, ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers. The beach’s laid-back atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, with coconut palms and lush greenery, make it a great spot for relaxing between surf sessions.
3. Praia da Engenhoca: Accessible via a scenic trail through the Atlantic Forest, Engenhoca Beach offers a quieter, more secluded surfing experience. The waves here are long and mellow, perfect for longboarders and those looking to improve their skills in a less crowded environment.

Accommodation in Itacaré

Itacaré offers a variety of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury eco-resorts. If you don’t look for a luxury place, you can easily arrive here without a reservation, walk around the town and you will find the place oyu like. I loved Villa encantos damata but go end explore the town yourself. Many places to stay are within walking distance of the beaches and town center, making it easy to explore the area. Pousadas, or guesthouses, are a popular choice, offering cozy, often family-run hospitality but if you are looking for something more high end then Itacaré Eco Resort or The Barracuda could be the right places for you.
