Morrocoy National Park, located on the northern coast of Venezuela in the state of Falcón, is a stunning natural paradise known for its turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and rich biodiversity. Covering an area of approximately 32,090 hectares, the park features a mosaic of small islands, cays, and coastal lagoons, making it a haven for beach lovers and snorkelers. Let’s explore the highlights of Morrocoy National Park, the best ways to experience its beauty, and some practical tips on how to get there.
The best of Morrocoy National Park:
The Islands and Cays:
- Cayo Sombrero: Definetely my favourite because it’s just perfect for snorkelling thanks to its crystal clear waters and reefs teeming with marine life.
- Cayo Sal: a perfect place to relax in the warm and shallow waters of saltwater lagoon. I reccomand to spend the entire day here as the place is not crowded at all and you will jut enjoy this serene nature reserve.
- Cayo Peraza and Cayo Borracho: These two cays offer and even more secluded experiences. These are also perfect for with snorkeling: you will be literally swiming with crowds of all different types of fish.
- Cayo Paiclás and Cayo Pescadores: Both perect for those looking for tranquility. These cays provide quiet spots to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Snorkeling and Diving
The coral reefs around the cays are home to a variety of marine species, making Morrocoy a popular destination for snorkeling and diving. Colorful fish, sea turtles, and coral formations can be seen in the clear waters. Guided tours are available for both beginners and experienced divers, offering insights into the underwater world. If you are planning to stay in one of the pousadas in Morrocoy, then for sure the owners will direct you toward a guided boat and snorkle tours. Otherwise you can check Frogmandive who ffers great deals for all types of snorkelling and diving tours or simply walk near the docks where you will find different tour operators.
Birdwatching and Wildlife
Morrocoy National Park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with a rich diversity of bird species, including pelicans, herons, and flamingos. The park’s mangroves and wetlands provide critical habitats for these birds, making it a key site for wildlife observation. The park is also home to other wildlife, such as iguanas and the occasional dolphin sightings along the coast. If you are interested in this kind of experiences and you like the tours off the beaten track, then you should book with Naturetrek.
If you are not keen on getting on a boat and visting the islands and cays, you can easily enjoy th ebeach in Morrocoy itself. The mainland beaches of Morrocoy, such as Playa Mero and Playa Azul, are absolutely stunning and offer beautiful coastal scenery. These beaches are also perfect for families with small babies.

Getting to Morrocoy National Park
The closest major airport to Morrocoy National Park is Arturo Michelena International Airport (VLN) in Valencia, approximately 120 kilometers away. From the airport, you will have basically two options: a car rental or a bus to the town of Tucacas (which is the main gateway to the park). The drive from Valencia to Tucacas typically takes around two hours, depending on traffic conditions. For those flying into Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela, the journey to Tucacas by car or bus takes approximately four to five hours. While it is a longer trip, it allows for a scenic drive through Venezuela’s diverse landscapes.
By Bus
Buses from Caracas and Valencia to Tucacas are available and provide a convenient and affordable way to reach the park. I advise you to check the latest schedules and availability directly at the bus stations.
By Car
Driving is a popular option for those who prefer flexibility and convenience. The route from Caracas involves taking the Autopista Regional del Centro (Central Regional Highway) and then connecting to the Autopista Morón-Tucacas. The roads are well-marked, but it’s important to be aware of local driving conditions and traffic regulations.
Accomodation
You can stay in Morrocoy or in Tucacas. In both places there are plenty of pousadas, hostels and fancy resorts. I personally can recomand the Posada de la Burra Blanca in Morrocoy.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Morrocoy National Park is during the dry season, from December to April, when weather conditions are most favorable for beach activities and outdoor excursions. The wet season, from May to November, can bring more rainfall and potentially less predictable weather.
