How to Get to Parque Nacional San Miguel
By Car
Driving is the most convenient way to reach Parque Nacional San Miguel, as public transportation options are limited. The park is about a 4-hour drive from Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. Here’s how to get there:
- From Montevideo: Take Route 5 north to Route 24, then head west on Route 24 until you reach the park entrance.
- From Paysandú: Head south on Route 24, following signs to the park.
I strongly recommend to rent a car in Montevideo and drive here. You can spend couple of days here or longer if you prefer but definitely driving yourself is. the best way to get here. Usually there is not much of traffic and driving in Uruguay is definitely less stressful than driving in any other South American country.

By Bus
While direct buses to the park are not available, you can take a bus to a nearby town, such as Young or Paysandú, and then arrange for a taxi or a shared van to the park (not so easy though)Buses from Montevideo and other major cities frequently service these towns.
- To Young: Take a bus from Montevideo to Young, then arrange for a taxi or local transport to the park.
- To Paysandú: Similar process; buses are available from Montevideo and other locations.
Important Info:
Permits: Check on the Park website if you need a permit or entry fee for the park. As of the latest updates, no special permits are required, but it’s always good to confirm before your visit.
You can visit the park by yourself or enroll on an ecotour like this one: Senderos Tours
Accomodation near the Park
There is only one place where you can stay directly in the park. Hostería Fortín de San Miguel It’s a great hotel where you can sleep and enjoy tasty food in their restaurant. To book, contact them directly on social media or by phone: +598 4474 6607 / 6537
If you don’t find the place in Hosteria above, you can always stay in the nearby town of Chuy where you will surely find a hostel, a hotel or an apartment. Chuy is a small and sleepy town but it’s convenient to stay there for a couple of nights and visit the Park.
