Top 5 Reasons to Visit Odense, Denmark’s Charming City

Odense is often overshadowed by Copenhagen, but this charming city offers an unforgettable mix of history, culture, and stunning nature. Situated on the island Funen (Fyn), the town is best known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Odense is surely a dream destination for lovers of fairy tales but I personally liked it because of many cycling paths. There are endless possibilities of cycling away from the city, passing by sunny countryside landscape, canals and finally the fjords. The city itself offers a more authentic Danish experience than Copenhagen. Inthis post I will give you at least five good reasons to visit Odense. Of course I will advice you which fantastic cycling itineraries are worth exploring. Let’s start:

1. The Legacy of Hans Christian Andersen

Odense is the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen, the legendary storyteller behind classics like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Snow Queen. The city embraces its literary heritage with immersive attractions:

  • Hans Christian Andersen Museum – A newly opened, interactive museum that brings his stories to life in a modern building. Even if you are not a fan of this author, don’t miss this place as it’s interesting also because of its architecture and gardens.
  • HCA Childhood Home – A charming 19th-century house where the author grew up. Just a simply house but really lovely and not crowded at all. Perfect for a great picture.
  • Sculptures & Fairytale Route – Follow a trail of bronze statues inspired by his famous tales throughout the city. You will have to walk out of the old town and discover residential areas of this lovely town. Great itinerary to feel the real vibe of the city: basically you will feel like a local for a day.

2. Denmark’s Best Cycling City

Odense is Denmark’s official cycling capital, with over 540 km of dedicated bike lanes and scenic countryside routes. It’s simply perfect for an urban bike rides and great for a country side day trips. As said before there are endless possibilities for a long or short bicycle ride outside the city. You can find the full list of itineraries here. Let’s see in detail a couple of routes that in my opinion are a must if you visit Odense:

Fjord Cycling Itineraries

  • Odense to Kerteminde (30 km one way): A scenic ride along the Odense Fjord leading to the charming coastal town of Kerteminde. Enjoy stops at Hindsholm Peninsula, and beautiful sandy beaches. If 50-60 km in one day is too much, don’t hesitate to book an accommodation in Kerteminde. There is a fair amount of hotels and guest houses in town. If you are traveling on a budget, camping Kerteminde could be a great option. If you are willing to spend a bit more and enjoying the views of the bay then don’t look any longer – the Hotel Kerteminde Strand is the right choice.
The route is well signed but it’s good to have this map on your phone.
  • Odense Harbour to Klintebjerg (11km one way)
If you are cycling with smaller kids this shorter itinerary is perfect for you. Departing from the Odense harbour (but you can start in any place in town – the harbor is easy to reach on the safe cycling lanes) this route follows the Odense canal and crosses scenic countryside landscape. Check the detailed map from Odense center here. It will bring you to the serene Odense fjord. Klintebjerg is a little town and it offers a lovely beach, perfect for a family picnic. Fjords calm waters are perfect for a kayak or SUP ride. You must be lucky to find the renatls place open. It’s right in the harbor but usually it opens only on the weekend, even in summer. If you are here with kids, don’t miss a hidden playground – just few meters away from the harbor.
  • From Odense to Assens (40 km one way). If you are fit enough to cycle 80 km in one day then this route is perrfect for you. It’s a delightful journey through Funen’s picturesque landscapes and its serene countryside. Don’t hesitate to stop and rest in the middle of the traditional Danish farmlands or in one of lovely old villages like Tommerup. At the end of the route, the views of the coast at the Assens bay will make you feel so relax that you won’t be willing to go back to Odense. The direct cycling route between Odense and Assens covers approximately 39 kilometers one way. Download the map here.
