Top Attractions in Terceira, Azores: Must-See Sites

Terceira, meaning “third” in Portuguese, is the third-largest island in the Azores archipelago. Its diverse geography is a testament to its volcanic origins, featuring verdant pastures, rolling hills, and craters that punctuate the landscape. The island is known for its central mountain range, including the Serra de Santa Bárbara, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding ocean.

Known as the “Lilac Island” for its colorful sunsets and blooming hydrangeas, Terceira offers dramatic coastal cliffs, verdant forests, lava tube caves, and the striking Algar do Carvão volcanic chimney. Beyond its natural wonders, the island is steeped in history—home to Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city with cobbled streets, 16th-century forts, and baroque churches that tell stories of maritime glory and resilience. Whether you’re hiking through its wild interior or exploring centuries-old alleyways, Terceira is where nature and heritage meet in perfect harmony.

Places you cannot miss in Terceira:

1. Monte Brasil

Dominating the landscape near Angra do Heroísmo, Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano and home to Forte de São João Baptista. The fort, built in the 16th century, provides a glimpse into Terceira’s military history and offers stunning views of the bay. The fort itself is not accessible if not on a guided tour. You can find more information here. However, it’s possible and advisable to follow the little road between the old walls and the military fort, that will get you to the path that goes to the top of Mount Brasil. It’s not a demanding walk and you will enjoy a nice view of the city, encounter with the local cats colony and simply spend some time in the nature, super close to Angra. If you travel with kids, they will definitely enjoy the ocean view playground just beneath the Mountain.

2. Algar do Carvão:

A unique geological marvel, Algar do Carvão is a volcanic chimney and cavern that allows visitors to descend into the heart of the earth. This underground experience provides insight into Terceira’s volcanic history.

4. Biscoitos

Biscoitos is located on the northern coast of Terceira and it is a charming parish best known for its volcanic landscape and natural lava rock pools. These rugged pools, formed by ancient lava flows meeting the Atlantic Ocean, offer a unique and refreshing place for a swim, especially during the warmer months. The striking contrast of black volcanic rock against the deep blue sea makes for stunning photo opportunities and an unforgettable coastal experience.

In addition to its scenic coastline, Biscoitos is also a notable wine-producing region, part of the island’s historic viticulture tradition. The area’s vineyards are grown in small, stone-walled plots called “curraletas,” which protect the vines from ocean winds and salt. A visit to the local Wine Museum (Museu do Vinho dos Biscoitos) provides insight into Terceira’s wine-making heritage and often includes tastings of the region’s distinctive Verdelho wines.

5. Serra do Cume

Serra do Cume is one of Terceira’s most iconic viewpoints and a must-visit for any traveler exploring the island. Situated on the eastern side of Terceira, this elevated ridge provides a sweeping, panoramic view over the “patchwork quilt” of the island’s central farmlands—an intricate mosaic of green fields separated by volcanic stone walls and hedgerows. The landscape, known locally as the “Manta de Retalhos,” is especially breathtaking at sunrise or sunset, when the light casts dramatic shadows across the valley.

The viewpoint is easily accessible by car, making it a popular stop for those doing a scenic drive around the island. On clear days, you can see all the way to Praia da Vitória and beyond, taking in the rolling hills, the coast, and the Atlantic horizon. It’s also a serene spot for quiet reflection, photography, or simply soaking in the grandeur of Terceira’s natural beauty.

As with the rest of the island, Serra do Cume is surrounded by a network of hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the area on foot. Stay tuned for an upcoming dedicated post on hiking in Terceira—there’s so much more to discover!

How to get there?

Getting to Terceira Island in the Azores is relatively straightforward, thanks to its well-connected airport, Lajes Airport (TER). From mainland Portugal, you can fly directly from Lisbon or Porto with airlines like TAP Air Portugal, SATA Azores Airlines, or Ryanair. There are also seasonal direct flights from several European cities (like Frankfurt or Paris) and from the United States and Canada (especially from Boston or Toronto), often operated by Azores Airlines. If you’re coming from further abroad, it’s best to connect through a major European hub like Lisbon, Madrid, or London. Once in the Azores, inter-island flights and ferries make it easy to hop between islands. And yes, it’s worth to see more than one island.
