Graciosa is located in the central group of the Azores archipelago and it is the second smallest of the nine volcanic islands that make up this Portuguese territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. Covering just 60.7 square kilometers, Graciosa may be modest in size, but it boasts an outsized charm. Known as the “White Island” due to its distinctive light-colored volcanic rock and soft landscape contours, this island offers a serene escape from the busier tourist spots in the Azores.
Graciosa is known for its raw natural beauty, unique geological formations, and peaceful atmosphere. From the underground lake of Furna do Enxofre to its geothermal hot springs, vineyard-draped hills, and traditional windmills, the island presents a picture-perfect combination of nature and culture. No crowds and a slow-paced rhythm of life. Graciosa is ideal if you are seeking authenticity, relaxation, and a deeper connection with the environment. Let’s see why Graciosa is a hidden gem well worth the journey.
Natural Attractions

Furna do Enxofre
One of Graciosa’s most unique natural wonders, the Furna do Enxofre is an impressive volcanic vent located inside the Caldeira da Graciosa. You will be able to descend into this underground chamber and discover a hidden world:
a vast cavern with an underground lake and fascinating stalactite formations. It’s an incredible experience that offers a glimpse into the island’s volcanic past.
Coastal Scenery & Thermal Baths
Graciosa’s coastline is lined with cliffs and natural swimming pools, offering some of the most peaceful and scenic seaside views in the Azores. Don’t miss the Carapacho thermal baths, where warm, geothermal waters flow into stone pools overlooking the Atlantic. It’s a perfect spot to relax and soak in the therapeutic benefits of nature.
Culture & Heritage

Santa Cruz da Graciosa
The island’s capital, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, is a quiet village filled with cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and a laid-back charm. At its heart is the Igreja de Santa Cruz, a 16th-century church.
Traditional Architecture & Vineyards
As you explore Graciosa, you’ll notice iconic windmills, traditional stone houses, and lush vineyards that lend the island a timeless character. These elements of rural Azorean life are still very much alive and part of the island’s identity.
Festivals & Religious Celebrations
Graciosa may be quiet, but it’s far from sleepy when it comes to traditional celebrations. The island hosts several festivals throughout the year. The exact dates of the festivities differs every year so check the details here. Among the most popular festivals we have:
- Holy Spirit Festival (Festa do Espírito Santo)
One of the most important religious festivals in the Azores, celebrated 50 days after Easter. It includes processions, church services, and communal meals. The highlight is the distribution of Sopas do Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit Soup), a symbolic dish shared by the whole community. - Our Lady of Guadalupe Festivities (Festas de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe)
Held in August (exact dates vary annually), this celebration honors the patron saint of Graciosa. It features religious processions, traditional music and dancing, and a lively fair with food, games, and local entertainment. The festivities center around the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe.
Hiking in Graciosa

It’s hard to to say which Azorean island is the best for hiking, but Graciosa certainly is a great place to explore unspoiled, scenic trails that traverse forests, fields, and coastal routes. I decided to write about the only trail I hiked on the island but feel free to check the Visit Azores website and go to the hiking section for more inspiration and detailed routes.
Serra Branca to Porto da Praia Hike
- Distance: 8.7 km (one way)
- Duration: Approx. 3.5 hours (with children and breaks)
- Elevation Gain: ~147 meters (482 feet)
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Trail Marking: PR01 GRA
This trail crosses the island from west to east, beginning in Serra Branca, an area characterized by volcanic structures made from thick layers of white trachyte (from which it takes its name). The hike is generally easy and suitable for active families — especially those used to outdoor walking, regardless of the child’s exact age.
Start from Pico da Caldeirinha, near the Eolic Park, where high elevation offers panoramic views. Follow the clearly marked trail as it takes you through pastures with grazing cows, orchards, and patches of woodland. Toward the end, you’ll pass through an eucalyptus forest that leads down to the harbor and beach at Porto da Praia — a great spot to rest and enjoy the sea.

For the return, you can either:
- Hike back the same route,
- Take public transportation, or
- Call a taxi from Porto da Praia.
This trail is a beautiful way to explore the diversity of Graciosa’s landscape in just one walk.
Marine Life
Graciosa is a paradise for snorkeling, diving, and whale watching. Its clear waters and rugged coastline make it an ideal location for marine exploration. However, the island has very few (if any) tour operators, meaning you must bring your own gear or plan a guided multi-day experiences starting on the island of Terceira or Sao Jorge.

Graciosa may be smaller and quieter than other Azorean islands, but that’s precisely where its magic lies. Its underground caverns, tranquil coastlines, cultural depth, and slow-paced charm make it perfect if you are seeking forauthenticity, nature, and history in equal measure. Whether you’re hiking through volcanic hills, soaking in thermal baths, or watching the sunset from a natural pool, Graciosa will be an unforgettable destination of your next trip.
How to get there and move around?
The best way to move around Graciosa is to rent a car, most companies have their offices at the airport just like Azores Rental Cars. Renting a vehicle will give you more flexibility while visiting the island and will save you lots of time. The public transport is not bad at all but connects only main villages. If you don’t want to drive you can always hop on a taxi and you can arrange the drop off and pick ups with the taxi drivers most of whom speaks at least a little bit of English.
Like all the Azores islands Graciosa has an airport with daily flights to and from Ponta Delgado. No direct flights from main land Europe. The ferry terminal is located in Vila da Praia and it offers maritime connections to Terceira e Sao Jorge, mainly in the summer though, so be careful you could get almost stuck on this beautiful island. Check the Atlanticoline website for the prices and timetables. You can book your tickets directly online.
