Discover Syros: A Hidden Gem in the Cyclades

Syros Island is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Cyclades — a Greek island that combines authentic charm, neoclassical beauty, and crystal-clear beaches. Unlike Mykonos or Santorini, Syros remains peaceful and local, offering a perfect mix of culture, nature, and Greek island life.

Here you will enjoy Mediterranean flavors, kayak or SUp trips, hiking and romantic evenings under the stars.

The Best Beaches in Syros

Varvousa Beach

From the wild North of the island to a calm and relaxing South, there are all types of beaches perfect for families, couples or solo adventurers. My suggestion is to explore all of them. The island is relatively small and if you spend a week here, you will be able to see it all. Let’s discover some of my favorites spots:

Delfini Beach – The Northern Gem

One of my favorite beaches in Syros. It is located just north of Kini and ideally you want a 4X4 to get here, although we drove a normal car and it was ok. The road leading there winds through the arid hills before revealing a peaceful bay of turquoise water and soft sand mixed with pebbles. Delfini is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or unwinding with the sound of cicadas and waves. Despite its growing popularity, it has preserved its natural beauty and laid-back vibe.

If you have your own stand up paddle board or kayak, bring it and go for a little trip to the nearby, small uninhabited island — close enough to reach in a few minutes of paddling.

Hiking from Delfini to Secluded Beaches

Varvarousa Beach from the hiking trail

If you prefer exploring on foot, a coastal trail starts from Delfini and connects to two of the island’s most secluded beaches: Varvarousa Beach and Aetos Beach.

  • Varvarousa Beach is a quiet, crescent-shaped bay surrounded by rocky hills and wild vegetation. The water is clear and deep, and often you’ll find it entirely empty. It’s accessible by boat or through a wild trail from Delifini beach. It takes around 30 minutes to hike from Delfini and the views are spectacular. The trail is not well signed but there are some stone strcutures that help you to understand the right way. Bring all you need because at Varvarousa, there is absolutely nothing. If you want some shade, you can cool off under the trees planted on the beach.
  • Aetos Beach is even more fascinating as it is further away from Delfini. Also this beach is reachable only by boat or through a trail. It takes half an hour from Varvarousa beach and one hour from Delfini. Some people hike from the village called Papouri. Both trails are not well signed and often there are not many people hiking so pay attention at the little stone pyramids that indicates the right path. The views from above are stunning.
Aetos Beach

Both beaches are often empty, even during the summer season. I advice to hike early in the morning if you suffer from the hot weather. There is absolutely no shade on the trail. Bring plenty of water, cover your head and put some sun screen. It’s it totally worth to hike to these beaches.

The Southern Beaches
Comfort, Charm, and Family-Friendly Fun

Komito Beach

While the north of Syros is wild and untouched, the southern coast offers comfort and accessibility. Roads are smoother, and beaches are organized with tavernas, loungers, and bars. Here beaches you can rent a kayak, a water bike or even a motor boat. The water is crystal clear and perfect for snorkelling.

Galissas Beach

A long sandy beach perfect for families, with shallow water and a charming chapel perched on a nearby hill. It offers all sorts of services: bars, restaurant, big parking place, kayak rentals. Non wonder, it’s packed in summer. It’s exposed to the Northern wind and with a bit of luck, the waves could be surfable.

Agathopes Beach:

Famous for its soft sand and clear shallow water, this beach is loved by both locals and visitors. Several beachfront tavernas serve fresh seafood and Syros’ signature loukoumi desserts. Meltemi restaurant is just few steps away. The. beach is perfect for water sports. I advice you a SUP or kayak trip to the nearby Komito beach, less crowded and with excellent scenery.

Varis Beach and Fabrika Beach

The chapel on the island reachable from Fabrika beach

Further South from Agatophes, you will find two less popular beaches: Varis and Fabrika. Both are protected form the wind and are perfect for snorkeling and stand up paddling. Varis usually is more crowded as there are many vacation rentals in the area. Fabrika is more secluded and more local. It’s proximity to a nearby little island (reachable in kayak or SUP) makes this beach one of my favorites.

These southern beaches make Syros an excellent choice for travelers who want both relaxation and comfort without the crowds of other Cycladic islands.

Ermoupoli: The Neoclassical Heart of the Aegean

Syros is not only about the beach. The capital of the island, Ermoupoli, is unlike any other Cycladic town. Built amphitheatrically around its harbor, it’s full of elegant mansions, marble stairways, and Venetian-style architecture that reflect the island’s prosperous past.

Stroll through Miaouli Square, lined with palm trees and cafés, and visit the Apollo Theater, a miniature version of Milan’s La Scala. In the evening, the city transforms — restaurants and wine bars fill with people, the lights shimmer on the water, and a sophisticated yet easygoing energy takes over.

During the summer, Syros hosts a variety of cultural festivals, such as the Syros International Film Festival, the Classical Music Festival, and Rebetiko concerts celebrating the island’s rich musical heritage. These events make Syros a lively cultural hub in the Cyclades.

Ano Syros: The Old Hilltop Town

Above Ermoupoli sits Ano Syros, a medieval village that feels frozen in time. Its narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, and blue doors create a maze of quiet charm. As you climb higher, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over the harbor and the Aegean Sea. Don’t miss the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George, which crowns the hill, and the small cafés tucked between bougainvillea-covered houses. Come at sunset for one of the best panoramic views on the island — a photographer’s dream. The view from the Cathedral is unforgettable: the sea and the sunset toward the West and a typical Greek country side to the East.

Where to Eat?
The Best Fish Restaurants in Syros

Syros is known for its excellent seafood and local gastronomy. I feel like recommending personally two standout tavernas Meltemi and Ora. Both are lcated on the western side of the island, near the village Finikas. Meltemi serves freshly grilled fish, octopus, and seafood pasta, with tables right by the water. The atmosphere is relaxed and local, the kind of place where time slows down. Ora is favorite among locals — known for its impeccable service and traditional dishes like fava, marinated anchovies, and the catch of the day drizzled with lemon and olive oil. The fresh grilled fish is excellent and the view of the bay in the evening is stunning.

Accommodation

Syros Island offers a wonderful range of accommodation options to suit every traveler’s taste — from charming guesthouses in the cobbled streets of Ermoupoli to elegant boutique hotels and seaside villas scattered along the coast. You can choose to stay near the beach, where the sound of the waves and golden sunsets create a truly relaxing atmosphere, or in the old town, surrounded by neoclassical architecture, cozy cafés, and vibrant local life. Each area has its own magic: the beachside promises tranquility and stunning sea views, while the old town offers culture, history, and convenience at your doorstep.

For those seeking the perfect balance of comfort, elegance, and serenity, I highly recommend Reggina’s Apartments in Poseidonia — ideal for anyone looking for a quiet stay in a luxurious setting with a breathtaking sea view, without spending a fortune. Book directly from the official website and get the best deal.

How to Get to Syros Island

Getting to Syros is easy and convenient:

  • By Ferry: Multiple ferries depart daily from Piraeus (Athens’ main port) and Rafina, with a travel time between 2.5 to 4 hours depending on the vessel. Syros is also well connected to nearby islands like Mykonos, Tinos, and Paros, making island-hopping effortless.
  • By Plane: Syros has a small domestic airport with regular flights from Athens International Airport, lasting just 35 minutes.

Because of its central position in the Cyclades, Syros is an ideal base for exploring the region — yet it’s so beautiful that you may not want to leave.

Why Will You Fall in Love with Syros?

Syros combines everything travelers dream of in a Greek island:

  • Pristine beaches and natural landscapes
  • Rich history and neoclassical architecture
  • Warm, genuine locals and unforgettable cuisine
  • Cultural events that bring art and tradition to life

It’s a place where time slows down, beauty feels effortless, and every evening ends with the scent of jasmine and sea salt in the air.
