When most people think of Athens, the Acropolis and ancient ruins come to mind. But what many travelers don’t realize is that Athens is also a seaside city. The so-called Athenian Riviera stretches south from the city toward Cape Sounion, offering sandy shores, turquoise waters, and a mix of serene local beaches and lively beach clubs.
Along this coastal stretch, you’ll find everything from free public beaches where locals swim every morning to stylish beach clubs with sunbeds, cocktails, and DJs. Most public beaches provide free umbrellas, changing rooms, and showers, making it easy to enjoy the sea without extra cost.
Let’s discover some of the best beaches in and around the capital city of Greece — and let’s see how to get there from central Athens.
Flisvos Free Beach – Local and Family-Friendly
Located near Flisvos Park and Marina, this beach is one of the easiest and most accessible options within the city. It’s a free public beach that’s especially popular with families and older Athenians who enjoy their daily swims.
Expect a relaxed, authentic atmosphere — no loud music, no flashy sunbeds, just locals enjoying the sea. You can swim, snorkel, or try stand-up paddling. There’s even a paddleball area, a beloved Greek beach pastime. The nearby Flisvos Park playground is excellent for children, and the promenade is perfect for an evening stroll.
How to get there?
Take the Tram Line 7 (towards Asklipio Voulas) from Syntagma Square and get off at Flisvos stop – about 35 minutes.
Glyfada Beach – The Cosmopolitan Choice

Often called the heart of the Athenian Riviera, Glyfada is where locals, expats, and travelers all mix. There are both free sections and organized beach clubs with bars and loungers. The crowd is young and international — you’ll find Erasmus students, digital nomads, and stylish Athenians spending the day swimming, sunbathing, and playing beach volleyball. When the sun sets, Glyfada transforms into a nightlife hub with restaurants, rooftop bars, and boutiques.
How to get there?
Take Tram Line 7 from Syntagma or Neos Kosmos to Glyfada stop (approx. 50–55 minutes) or a taxi (25–30 min, ~€15–20).
Astir Beach Club – Luxury by the Sea

If you’re in the mood for glamour, head to Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni. It’s one of the most exclusive beach clubs in Greece — think champagne service, designer swimwear, and turquoise waters.
Entry is paid (prices vary by season and seating area), and you’ll be surrounded by an elegant, international crowd. The facilities are top-notch, and the water quality here is superb.
How to get there?
About 30–40 minutes by taxi from central Athens, or take Bus 122 from Elliniko Metro Station (Line 2) to Astir stop.
Bolivar Beach Club – Music and Fun

Located in Alimos, Bolivar blends tropical vibes with a lively social scene. Expect tiki bars, palm trees, and a DJ soundtrack. During the day, it’s relaxed, but in the evening, it transforms into one of Athens’ top beach party spots.
Entry costs about €8/day or €4 after 5 p.m., while sunbeds and umbrellas are rented separately (€10–25/day).
How to get there?
Take Tram Line 7 to Kalamaki or Zefyros stop (about 35 minutes from Syntagma) or drive/taxi (~20 min).
Vouliagmeni Lake – A Natural Spa

Not technically a beach, Vouliagmeni Lake is a natural thermal lake surrounded by cliffs. Its slightly warm, mineral-rich waters are said to have healing properties. There are changing rooms, sunbeds, and a café. Entry fee is around €15–20 depending on season and day of the week.
How to get there?
Bus 122 from Elliniko Metro to Limni Vouliagmenis stop.
Varkiza Beach – Relaxed and Family-Friendly
Further down the coast, Varkiza offers wide sandy stretches and organized facilities. It’s great for families thanks to calm waters, playgrounds, and beachside restaurants. You can choose between free areas or the organized Yabanaki Beach Resort, which offers water sports and beach bars.
How to get there?
Take Bus 171 or 122 from Elliniko Metro (Line 2). Driving takes about 40–45 minutes from central Athens.
Lagonisi – For a Touch of Secluded Luxury
A little further south lies Lagonisi, known for its crystal-clear waters and upscale resorts. The Grand Resort Lagonissi has private beach areas, but there are also several public coves nearby that are free and stunning. It’s quieter than Glyfada or Vouliagmeni, perfect for a romantic escape.
How to get there?
About 50 minutes by car or Bus 122 + 171 to Lagonisi stop.
Anavyssos Beach – Surf Vibes and Sunset Views
A local favorite for windsurfing and long beach walks, Anavyssos has both organized and free zones. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the sunsets here are some of the best on the Athenian Riviera.
How to get there?
Around 1 hour by car or KTEL bus from central Athens (departing from Mavrommateon or Ag. Marina stations).
Cape Sounion Beaches – Mythology Meets the Sea

Make a day trip to Cape Sounion, home to the iconic Temple of Poseidon. After visiting the temple, head down to one of the nearby coves such as Legrena Beach for a swim with ancient views. It’s a peaceful and scenic end to your Riviera journey. To be honest this part of Athens is also great to stay away from the downtown crowds so check the available accommodation and stay for a weekend if you can. It’s not so well connected by the public transport unfortunately but it is really great to enjoy the seaside, hikes and great restaurants.
How to get there?
About 1 hour 15 minutes by car, or take a KTEL bus to Sounion from the Pedion Areos terminal.
Schinias Beach – A Weekend Getaway

Located on the northeastern side of Attica, near Marathon, Schinias Beach is a long sandy bay lined with pine trees. It’s ideal for swimming, windsurfing, and relaxing away from the city crowds.
How to get there?
About 1 hour drive from Athens or KTEL bus to Marathon, then a short taxi ride but I advice you to rent a car and drive.

Don’t skip the seaside when you visit Athens — it’s an essential part of the true experience. The Athenian Riviera is not just a summer destination; it’s a year-round escape.

In the warmer months, the coast comes alive with sunbeds, beach bars, and the sound of the Aegean waves. But even in autumn and winter, the beaches remain a hidden gem. While the sea may be cooler and snorkeling less tempting, the atmosphere is pure magic — peaceful promenades, golden sunsets, and locals enjoying a brisk seaside walk or a morning coffee by the water.
Whether you come for a sunny swim in July or a tranquil coastal stroll in January, Athens’ beaches are always worth a visit. They’re not just a side trip — they’re a beautiful reminder that the sea is woven into the city’s soul.
