Beyond the Shores: Hiking the Mountains Above Lake Como

Lake Como is world famous for its stunning waters, charming villages, and luxurious lakeside villas. But if you look beyond the sparkling surface, you’ll discover that the true magic lies in the mountains surrounding the lake. These hills and peaks offer some of the most breathtaking hiking opportunities in northern Italy. Here you will enjoy panoramic views, rich history, and nature trails that range from gentle strolls to challenging mountain treks. There are plenty of trails and many beautiful villages around Lake Como. It’s impossible to count them all, and surely it’s hard to write about all of them just in one post. Today I will take for some of the most amazing hikes in the area of three little villages: Sala Comacina, Lenno, and Argegno. These three picturesque towns are perfect gateways not only for a lake side relax but also for mountain adventures. Let’s start the journey!

Sala Comacina: From Lakeside Charm to Alpine Views

Sala Comacina is a small village situated on the western shore of Lake Como, known for its peaceful ambiance and proximity to nature. It’s the ideal starting point for hikers wanting to explore the hills rising above the lake.

1. Greenway del Lago di Como: A Scenic Lakeside Stroll

The Greenway del Lago di Como is a well-maintained trail stretching about 10 kilometers along the western lake shore, linking quaint villages and offering incredible views of the water and mountains. Starting from Sala Comacina, this mostly flat path is perfect for those who want to combine hiking with cultural experiences — you’ll pass by ancient churches, old mills, and charming local cafes. It’s a wonderful way to soak up the atmosphere of Lake Como while enjoying gentle exercise.

The trail is accessible year-round, and because it hugs the shoreline, it’s ideal for families or casual walkers who want a scenic and relaxed hike without the strain of mountain climbing. The path eventually leads to Lenno, where you can continue your journey or stop for a lakeside lunch. Want to find out more? Check my post about Green Way here.

2. Sala Comacina to Alpe di Sala: For Advanced Hikers

For those seeking a more demanding hike, the route from Sala Comacina up to Alpe di Sala offers a rewarding challenge. The trail head is on the Green Way – just follow the signs toward Alpe Di Sala. This trail climbs steadily through dense forests and wildflower-strewn meadows, with occasional glimpses back toward the shimmering lake below. The air grows cooler and crisper as you ascend, and the sound of cicadas gives way to birdsong and the rustle of leaves.

At the summit, the views are simply spectacular. You can gaze across Lake Como’s azure surface, framed by towering mountains and dotted with villages that look like they’ve been painted onto the landscape. This moderately difficult hike typically takes 3 to 4 hours round trip and is best suited for those with some hiking experience. Be sure to bring plenty of water and good footwear, as the trail can be steep in sections.

Lenno: Lakeside Elegance Meets Mountain Majesty

Lenno is famed for its stunning villas and gardens, but beyond the elegant waterfront lies a gateway to peaceful mountain trails that show a different side of Lake Como.

1. From Lenno to the Abbey of San Benedetto in Val Perlana

This loop of around 13km is a moderate trail perfect for exploring nature and culture. The trail has some steep ascents, narrow sections, and uneven terrain — so it’s not suitable for r total beginners. The elevation gain is about 630m and it usually takes 4-5 hours to complete it.

Begin your hike at Lenno’s ferry dock, walking along the lakeside promenade to Piazza XI Febbraio, where you’ll see the Church of Santo Stefano and the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista. You should see the signs ?Santuario San Benedetto”. Continue along Via Antica Regina toward the hamlet of Campo. Cross the Perlana stream, follow Via Luigi Vaccani uphill toward Mulini, and reach the first chapel of the Via Crucis of the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio. Here you can stop to enjoy the panoramic spot with views over the lake.

The path continuous steeply to the Cremia clearing, then climbs up through the woods along the side of the valley, passing a few rustic stone huts. After a more demanding stretch and a few stream crossings, you arrive at the ancient Romanesque abbey, surrounded by silence and nature at around 820m. There’s a spring and a small rest area to enjoy your well deserved break.

2. Ospedaletto to Cendraro Lago: A Serene Mountain Escape

If you prefer a quieter, less trafficked route, the trail from Ospedaletto to Cendraro Lago is a fantastic choice. This 10km (5.9-mile) point-to-point hike gains about 150m in elevation, taking you through peaceful forests and along mountain streams. The path leads to a small alpine lake — Cendraro — where you can pause to relax and soak in the tranquility.

The trail is moderately easy and well-suited for hikers who want to escape the busier lakeside towns. Along the way, you’ll find shaded spots perfect for picnics, and on clear days, stunning views that stretch across the lake and beyond to the distant Alps.

Argegno: Your Gateway to the Western Alps

Argegno is a charming village on the western shore, known for its picturesque old town and ferry connections. It’s also the starting point for some exciting mountain trails that lead higher into the Western Alps.

1. Argegno to Pigra Mule Track: History and Views

One of the most popular hikes from Argegno is the old mule track to Pigra, a small mountain village perched about 600 meters above the lake. This historic path was once used by locals to transport goods and is now a favorite for hikers and mountain bikers. It’s popular among hikers but it is not too crowded – most tourists choose to go up by the funicular.

The trail is well-maintained, with stone steps and switchbacks that gently climb through chestnut forests and terraced fields. Along the way, you’ll pass by old stone farmhouses and olive groves, offering a glimpse into the region’s rural heritage. Reaching Pigra is worth the effort — the village boasts incredible panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains, perfect for a rest break or a coffee at the local café. From Pigra, you can continue hiking on connecting trails or take the cable car back down to Argegno.

2. Four Valleys Trail

For hikers looking for a full-day challenge, the 4 Valleys Trail (Quattro Valli) is a demanding but rewarding trek through several interconnected valleys around Argegno. This trail weaves through dense forests, alpine meadows, and rocky ridges, offering constant variety and stunning landscapes.

The route covers about 15-20 kilometers, depending on your chosen path, and involves significant elevation gain, so it’s best suited for experienced hikers in good physical condition. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views over the lake, glimpses of wildlife such as deer and marmots, and the fresh mountain air.

Tips for Hiking in the Lake Como Mountains

Hiking in the Lake Como mountains is a joyful experience, but it’s important to be prepared:

  • Check the Weather as the mountain conditions can change rapidly. Even if the lakeside is sunny, bring rain gear and warm layers.
  • Wear Proper Footwear because the trails can be rocky and steep. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip will keep you safe and comfortable.
  • Hydrate and Pack Snacks. Carry enough water and energy-boosting snacks, especially on longer hikes.
  • Use a GPS device or reliable hiking app. Some trails may be poorly marked, so an offline map is essential.
  • Respect Nature. Stay on marked trails to protect the environment. Carry out all your rubbish and be mindful of wildlife.

While Lake Como’s stunning waters and elegant towns may steal the spotlight, the mountains above the lake hold treasures all their own. Whether you’re looking for gentle strolls through charming villages or challenging alpine hikes with breathtaking vistas, the trails from Sala Comacina, Lenno, and Argegno offer something for every type of adventurer.

So, next time you visit Lake Como, don’t just admire it from the shore — lace up your hiking boots and explore the heights for an unforgettable experience where nature, history, and beauty converge.
