Best Hiking Trails Near Canazei in the Dolomites: 5 Scenic Routes You Shouldn’t Miss

There are few places in Europe where hiking feels as stunning as it does in Canazei. Hidden inside Val di Fassa in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, this alpine village is surrounded by jagged limestone peaks, emerald meadows, glacier views, and panoramic mountain passes that seem designed for unforgettable trekking days.

Whether you are planning a summer Dolomites road trip, a family mountain holiday, or a more adventurous hiking escape, Canazei is one of the best bases in northern Italy. From easy panoramic walks suitable for children to full-day alpine loops crossing high passes and mountain huts, the area offers some of the most spectacular hiking in the UNESCO-listed Dolomites.

I have chosen five great hiking trails near Canazei. Ready to check them out?

1. Viel del Pan Trail – The Most Scenic Family Hike

If you only have time for one hike in Canazei, make it the Viel del Pan trail. Known as the “Bread Route,” this historic path once connected trading valleys and today offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Dolomites, with constant views of the Marmolada glacier.

This is also one of the best family-friendly hikes in the Dolomites because the trail stays relatively gentle for most of the route.

The easiest way to start is by taking the Canazei cable car to Col dei Rossi. From the upper station, follow signs for “Viel del Pan” and trail markers 601 toward Rifugio Fredarola. The route continues across wide alpine paths with almost uninterrupted mountain views.

The trail is easy to follow because the signs are frequent and the route remains exposed along the ridge overlooking Lago di Fedaia and the Marmolada massif. After reaching Rifugio Viel del Pan, you can either continue toward Passo Pordoi or return along the same route.

You can make it a circular route -simply continue toward Porta Vescovo before looping back via trail 680 toward Passo Pordoi.

Distance: around 8–12 km depending on the variation
Time needed: 3 to 5 hours
Difficulty: moderate
Best for: families, panoramic hiking, first-time visitors to the Dolomites

2. Sass Pordoi and Piz Boè Loop
The Classic High-Altitude Adventure

For experienced hikers looking for a superior Dolomite scenery, the Piz Boè circuit is one of the most rewarding day hikes near Canazei. The route leads into the lunar landscape of the Sella Group and reaches one of the easiest 3,000-meter peaks in the Dolomites.

Start from Passo Pordoi, about 15 minutes by car or bus from Canazei. You can either hike to Sass Pordoi or take the cable car to save energy for the loop itself.

From Sass Pordoi, follow trail 627 toward Rifugio Boè. The path crosses rocky plateaus and high alpine terrain before reaching the summit of Piz Boè at 3,152 meters. After enjoying the panoramic terrace, continue descending toward Rifugio Boè and then follow trail 638 back toward Passo Pordoi, creating a full circular route.

The terrain here is rocky and exposed in sections, so proper hiking boots are essential. Snow patches can remain until early summer.

Distance: approximately 10 km
Time needed: 5 to 6 hours
Difficulty: moderate to challenging
Best for: experienced hikers and photographers

3. Val Duron Loop – A Peaceful Alpine Valley Walk

Val Duron is one of the quieter hiking areas near Canazei and perfect for people looking for gentler landscapes, flower-filled meadows, and traditional mountain huts. It’s a great trail for families with kids used to longer walks.

The hike begins in Campitello di Fassa, just a few minutes from Canazei. From the village, follow trail 532 into Val Duron. The route gradually climbs through forests and open alpine pastures toward Rifugio Micheluzzi, one of the prettiest mountain hut in the valley.

Continue deeper into the valley until you reach the open basin beneath the Sassolungo mountains. To turn the hike into a circular trail, continue toward Passo Duron and descend via trail 578 before reconnecting with the valley route.

Unlike some of the rocky hikes around the Sella Group, Val Duron is softer and greener. Once again, simply perfect for families with older children or a nice option for a relaxing hike.

Distance: 11–13 km
Time needed: 4 to 5 hours
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Best for: relaxed hiking days, nature lovers, families

4. Lake Antermoia Hike
The Most Beautiful Alpine Lake Route

Lake Antermoia is one of the hidden gems of the Dolomites. Surrounded by pale rock towers and alpine silence, it feels far more remote than many famous hiking destinations in the region.

The route starts from the village of Mazzin or from Val di Fassa access points near Campitello. Follow trail 580 toward Passo Dona and then continue climbing toward Rifugio Antermoia.

The trail becomes steeper during the final ascent but rewards hikers with spectacular scenery once the turquoise lake appears beneath the Catinaccio mountains.

For a circular route, continue toward Passo Principe and descend through the Val Udai area before returning to the starting point.

This is a full hiking day and should not be underestimated, especially during unstable weather conditions. So make sure you are fit enough, bring the right equipment and check the weather before leaving your accommodation.

Distance: approximately 14–16 km
Time needed: 6 to 7 hours
Difficulty: moderate
Best for: alpine lake lovers and serious hikers

5. Friedrich August Trail
The Best Easy Panorama Walk

The Friedrich August trail is one of the easiest panoramic hikes near Canazei and another excellent option for families. The route runs beneath the Sassolungo massif with magnificent open views over the Sella Group and Val di Fassa.

Start from Passo Sella, reachable from Canazei in about 20 minutes by car or shuttle bus. Follow signs for Rifugio Friedrich August along a wide and very well-maintained trail.

You can simply walk out and back along the ridge because the scenery is continuously beautiful. However, you can create a gentle loop by descending toward Campitello paths before returning to Passo Sella.

This hike is especially stunning during sunrise or late afternoon when the Dolomite peaks glow pink in the famous “enrosadira” light.

Distance: around 7–10 km
Time needed: 2.5 to 4 hours
Difficulty: easy
Best for: families, beginner hikers, photographers

Where to Stay in Canazei?

Canazei has plenty of traditional alpine hotels, but if you want a special stay, there are a few places that combine mountain charm with boutique design and a more intimate experience.

If you are looking for a stylish boutique hotel right in the center of town, Locanda degli Artisti Art Hotel is one of the most charming options, combining contemporary interiors with Dolomite character.

If you prefer a quieter mountain atmosphere with wellness facilities and direct access to hiking trails, Hotel Lupo Bianco Wellness & Walking offers an authentic alpine setting surrounded by nature.

Finally, Fiores Eco-Green Agriturismo e Azienda Agricola Biologica, a beautiful eco-friendly agriturismo immersed in the landscapes of Val di Fassa where you will enjoy your refined rural stay. It’s 15 minutes from Canazei center but steps away from the hiking trails.

Canazei is one of the best hiking destinations in the Dolomites because it offers incredible variety. You can spend one day walking an easy panoramic trail beside alpine huts and the next climbing above 3,000 meters into rocky landscapes.

What makes the area special is not only the scenery but also how accessible these hikes are. Cable cars, mountain huts, and well-marked trails make it possible for both families and experienced hikers to explore the high Dolomites safely and comfortably.

If you are planning a Dolomites hiking trip, Canazei deserves several days on your itinerary — especially if you want to experience some of the most beautiful trails in Italy without constantly changing accommodation.
